Monitoring Mazak machines, two ways.
MTConnect where the machine supports it, hardwired signals where it does not — how to establish which applies to yours, and what each route delivers.
Mazak machines are among the better-instrumented machine tools on Indian floors, and monitoring them takes one of two routes depending on the machine: MTConnect where the machine supports it, or hardwired signals where it does not.
Which route applies is a fact about your specific machine rather than a preference, and establishing it takes about half an hour.
| Route | When it applies | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| MTConnect | Where the machine supports it, natively or through an adapter | A standardised read-only stream: machine state, cycle timing, counts and alarm presence |
| Hardwired signals | Where MTConnect is not available on that machine | States and counts from panel signals — drive contactor, stack light, existing counter |
| Both, across a floor | The common case on mixed-vintage Mazak fleets | One dashboard, one state vocabulary, regardless of how each machine was reached |
MTConnect is read-only by design — there is no write path in the standard. For a plant cautious about anything touching production equipment, that is a structural guarantee rather than a vendor assurance.
Running, idle, stopped
Machine condition through the shift with exact durations, which is what availability is computed from.
Cycle timing and part counts
Cycles and counts as the machine reports them, giving output and a cycle-time distribution rather than a shift average.
Alarm and fault presence
Enough to separate a fault stop from an idle stop before anybody has to ask what happened.
Operator identity, where enabled
Attribution for activity, where the control and your configuration support it.
Where the route is hardwired rather than MTConnect, the network step applies to the gateway rather than the machine, and uplink can be Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G — useful where a machine sits away from structured cabling.
MTConnect availability differs by model and age
Presence is a fact about your machine. Where it is absent, hardwired signals give the availability picture without controller-level detail.
Depth varies even where it is present
Two machines can both support MTConnect and expose materially different amounts of detail. Confirmed during the pilot.
Why the machine stopped
No standard supplies a reason. That comes from the operator at the machine, in two taps.
Two Mazak machines on a live dashboard this week.
We will establish the route on your machines during the pilot — MTConnect where it exists, hardwired where it does not. Thirty days, no cost.
