Monitoring for Siemens SINUMERIK machines.

The families we work with, what monitoring delivers, how to place a machine on the network in a plant that has an IT function, and the honest boundaries.

Siemens SINUMERIK controls appear on higher-specification machining centres and on much of the imported equipment in Indian aerospace, defence and precision work — the machines where an unplanned stop is most expensive and where monitoring pays back fastest.

This page covers the families we work with, what monitoring delivers, how to place a machine on the network sensibly, and the honest boundaries.

Model families

FamilyTypical machines in Indian plants
SINUMERIK 840D slMulti-axis machining centres, larger production machines, imported equipment in precision work
SINUMERIK 828DStandard machining centres and turning centres across general engineering

What a specific machine exposes depends on its generation and the options fitted at purchase. That is confirmed on your machines during the pilot rather than assumed from the family name.

What monitoring gives you

STATE

Running, idle, stopped

Machine condition through the shift with exact durations, which is what availability is computed from.

OUTPUT

Cycle timing and part counts

Cycles and counts as the machine reports them, giving output and a cycle-time distribution rather than a shift average.

EVENTS

Alarm and fault presence

Enough to separate a fault stop from an idle stop before anybody has to ask what happened.

PEOPLE

Operator identity, where enabled

Attribution for activity, where the control and your configuration support it.

How the data is acquired

Acquisition is configured by the MachineWise engineering team for the control in front of it. Integration is read-only: no control parameter is modified, nothing is installed on the control, and no program is written. What a specific machine exposes is confirmed on your machines during the pilot rather than accepted from a compatibility list.

Placing a SINUMERIK machine on the network

A practical guide for your maintenance and IT teams.

SEPARATEMachine network, not office networkMachines belong on their own segment with no route from general office IT. Agree this before addresses are assigned.
SETConfigure on the controlNetwork settings are reached through the control's own configuration screens; the machine manual gives the exact path for your version.
CABLETo a switch on that segmentEthernet from the machine's network port to a switch the monitoring server can reach.
TESTVerify from the server sideReachability confirmed from the monitoring server itself, not from a laptop on a different segment.

On SINUMERIK machines the point worth settling first is segmentation rather than addressing. These controls often sit in plants with a formal IT function, and the question of what can reach a machine will be asked. Answering it with a designed three-zone layout is far easier than retrofitting one after an objection is raised.

Limitations, stated plainly

VARIES BY GENERATION

Older controls expose less

Two machines of the same family bought years apart can differ. This is a fact about your machine, not a software setting, and it is established during the pilot.

VARIES BY OPTIONS

Option packages constrain it

A machine specified minimally at purchase can expose less than an older machine specified generously. Worth checking before a monitoring specification is written.

NEVER

Why the machine stopped

No control reports a reason. That comes from an operator at the machine, in two taps, and it is what turns a downtime record into a downtime analysis.

Questions

Straight answers.

Which Siemens controls can be monitored?
SINUMERIK 840D sl and 828D. What a specific machine exposes depends on its generation and the options fitted, and is confirmed on your machines during the pilot.
How is data acquired from a SINUMERIK control?
Acquisition is configured by the MachineWise engineering team for the control in front of it. Integration is read-only — nothing is written to the control and no parameter is changed.
Our IT team will ask what can reach the machines. What is the answer?
A three-zone layout: machines on their own segment with no route from office IT, the monitoring server as the single controlled crossing point, and users able to see dashboards but not reach machines.
Is a Siemens PLC the same as a SINUMERIK control?
No. SINUMERIK is a CNC control for machine tools; Siemens PLCs drive presses, lines and process equipment and are monitored differently. There is a separate page for PLC-driven equipment.
Does the machine need downtime to connect?
Generally not. What is needed is an address on the machine network segment and a cable to a switch the monitoring server can reach.
Can monitoring change a machine setting by accident?
No. There is no write path in the integration. Nothing is installed on the control and no program or parameter is modified.
